Although Shoppers grocery store in Potomac Yard closed in early 2020 due to a larger reorganization of the company, it looks as though it may be reopening as an Amazon Fresh store. The news was recently reported by the Washington Business Journal. According to the publication, “Keeping with its efforts to maintain a low profile, Amazon’s name does not appear on the documents for the grocery store planned for all or part of the roughly 50,000-square-foot space. But Toronto-based project architect NORR wrote in the filing that the drawings are for ‘Mendel,’ the code name for Amazon’s grocery endeavors that we cracked months ago.”

Designed from the ground up, Amazon Fresh is meant to offer a seamless shopping experience, with consistently low prices on a variety of brands and high-quality produce, meat, and seafood. A host of prepared meals are also available.

Wine enthusiasts will also be happy to learn that a Total Wine will be opening in the former Pier One space in Potomac Yard, next door to the expected Amazon Fresh store. The full-size supermarket from the e-commerce giant will be just one of many in the Alexandria area. This Memorial Day weekend, an Amazon Go store is reportedly opening in Manchester Lakes near Franconia. Another is expected to open in the Bailey’s Crossroads area.

Massive redevelopment is on the horizon for the entire Potomac Yard shopping center in the coming years. In fact, it has already begun with Virginia Tech’s $1 billion Innovation Campus. It’s expected that stores already in place with be integrated into the redevelopment.
